“A delay is better than a disaster”
What is going on I hear you cry? Why is there a pair of men’s hands in today’s header? Those are not just any mans hands; they are the hands of Sully or should I say the hands of Tom Hanks playing Sully, the amAzing pilot who saved the lives of an entire plane full of passengers and crew by landing on the Hudson River.
Yesterday I watched this incredible film and couldn’t believe my eyes when Sully took out a fortune cookie motto from his wallet; this wasn’t just for the film, he truly did keep this motto in his wallet and has done for YEARS! What are the chances?
You know this motto is pertinent to me too. I need to learn the art of delay…and maybe in that delay, perhaps just a breath I can make a better choice.
Sully’s delay avoided disaster…had he turned back to La Guardia all souls onboard would have been lost.
I did a bit of research before writing today’s piece and found a fascinating and insightful interview with the screen writer of the film; Todd Komarnicki. I will leave you with a quote from that interview.
I think the headline of “Sully” should be, “Good news wins”. We’re obsessed with bad news…these channels only make money by keeping the public terrified. So we’re guaranteed to have an endless supply of bad news…we’re being coached on how to feel poorly, and we need to look at the light. There’s a lot of beautiful things out there in the world, and heroism and kindness and goodness and grace, and this movie is a reminder of that, and we shouldn’t be cynical about it. We should embrace it because boy do we need some vitamins.
